Training in a car workshop in Gulu
Our training project is located in the up-and-coming city of Gulu in north-west Uganda, around 350 kilometres from Kampala. As the district capital in the Northern Region, Gulu is developing into the economic hub of northern Uganda. The city, with a population of around 325,000 (2020), is located in the Achioli settlement area.
We have known Daniel, a master mechanic, for many years. Daniel and his partner Charles have been running the ‘MIT-KOM GENERAL WORKSHOP’ in Gulu since the end of 2021. Initially, they only rented the outside area of a plot of land with a few shelters where they carried out their repair work on motor vehicles, tractors, generators, ... It has not been possible for them to train young people without support, although they have long toyed with the idea of taking on this task as part of their workshop.
We could clearly see that it was a matter close to their hearts to help young people in need who had no prospects. With our help, they found the courage to train young people in a workshop for a year with the appropriate support. The training period for car mechanics in Uganda is shorter than in Germany, lasting one year and concluding with a recognised state examination (certificate). The chairpersons of ‘Moyo Afrika - Werkstatt fürs Leben e.V.’ have extensive theoretical, practical and technical experience and skills in almost all areas that we want to utilise locally.
Due to the catastrophic training situation in Uganda, unemployed and sometimes homeless young people were quickly found who could gratefully accepted the offer of an annual training programme.
Just 65,- € per month secures a one-year training programme with a certificate in our training project in Gulu, Uganda.
